Tungsten has the highest melting point (3410°C or 6170°F) of all metals.? The extremely high melting point of pure tungsten makes all the common manufacturing techniques used for metals such as iron impractical. Specialized methods make possible the processing of pure tungsten into rod, sheet, and wire for a wide variety of high temperature applications including incandescent lamp wire, TIG welding electrodes, high temperature heat shielding, etc.

Since tungsten heavy metal filament is made of tungsten heavy metal, so it owns properties of tungsten—high melting point, high corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance, lowest thermal expansion and inactive to react with other gases. These properties lead tungsten heavy metal filament to have a better performance in bulbs.

Because of tungsten's properties, tungsten heavy metal filament is often used in bulbs. The bulb is sealed after removing air from it and filling it with inert gasses under low pressure, thus creating a partial vacuum and a non reactive atmosphere. Tungsten won't react with inert gasses under normal conditions. Thus fusing of the filament is avoided. If air was in it, the tungsten would burn out after reacting with oxygen.

Tungsten heavy metal filament is not only widely used as high temperature lamp filament, stock-resistance filament, doubles helix filament, electric incandescent lamp filament, and fluorescent light filament, but also used as tungsten heater element and other heater components in semiconductor. The reason is that tungsten has high melting point, and it is so inactive that it is difficult to react with other gases.
